Drupal LMS audit for an FMCG corporation

Attico International conducted a technical audit for a global FMCG corporation to help them discover the most suitable technical solution for creating a learning management system. As a result of the audit, Opigno LMS was selected as the best option in terms of cost and features.

Background

background

After 5 years of successful collaboration with Attico, our enterprise customer addressed the team again.

They needed technology consultants who would analyze the LMS solutions on the market and choose the one that meets their requirements and aligns with their business goals — to deliver nutrition education and parenting support.

Commercial

The client is a division of an international FMCG сorporation and a major player in the infant nutrition market. Here are some figures witnessing the company’s enormous scale:

  • Fortune 500 company
  • 270,000 employees and 477 factories all over the world
  • $105 billion annual sales in 2023
  • 188 countries they sell health and nutrition products in

The division whose representative contacted us focuses on providing expert nutrition support for parents of children from ages 0 to 36 months and parents-to-be. Not only do they offer a full range of supplements designed to support children’s health but also provide helpful resources and nutritional advice to their audience. This is done with a strategic goal to develop its parenting community, cultivate brand loyalty, increase audience engagement, and drive more traffic to their site.

Reasoning

As part of their commitment to delivering support to all parenting needs, the customer wanted to implement an LMS to offer educational content, courses, and interactive tools to their audience. They aimed to deliver a delightful training experience — learn anytime, anywhere — about all parenting topics via personalized microlearning and premium expert content.

Project & goals

The project goal was to create a learning management system that would serve as the origin touchpoint to the parenting ecosystem and respond to all parents’ needs across all journey stages: nutrition, social surroundings, education, and medical advice. By role, its users can be divided into 2 types:

  1. Family members: parents, parents-to-be, grandparents, and nannies
  2. Admins, who also happen to be nutrition experts
project & goals

The customer wanted to include a handful of features that would allow them to create a smooth and engaging online learning experience for the target audience:

  • Training catalog with free public or private trainings
  • History of viewed/completed trainings
  • Lessons with videos, text, images, audio, podcasts, and quizzes
  • Gamification with badge rewards and creative quizzes
  • Certification management
  • Private messages to admins
  • Search by training
  • Industry-standard security practices
  • Multilingual management
  • Single sign-on
  • Mobile adaptation

Nevertheless, they had no idea how to implement an e-learning solution that would meet all these requirements. Initially, they attempted to find it on their own: they analyzed several LMS providers, conducted demo calls with them, and gathered general information about each possible option. But this didn’t yield the expected results: the customer just lacked enough expertise to conduct a comprehensive LMS analysis. After all, they opted for seeking assistance from experts to perform a technical audit.

Cooperation history

The client and Attico have fostered a longstanding partnership since 2018, characterized by fruitful collaboration. Over this period, we have consistently demonstrated our reliability as a partner, culminating in the successful execution of numerous Drupal projects, including but not limited to:

  • Migrating 50 websites from Drupal 7 to 8
  • Creating a mobile application designed for tracking infant growth and body mass index
  • Converting a Drupal 9 site into a progressive web application focused on child development

Given our track record of successful collaboration and an established expertise in LMS development, the client has once again entrusted Attico with the delivery of their latest project.

Vendor selection

Upon request from the client, our team conducted a comprehensive evaluation of three LMS vendors — Sana, Docebo, and Instancy — selected through independent analysis. Following an in-depth assessment, it became evident that none of these vendors could satisfy the client’s requirements in terms of features, security, and integration with their other systems.

In parallel, our team carried out a comprehensive audit of Drupal-based learning management systems and identified two leaders: Opigno and Anu. The team analyzed both options and concluded that Opigno LMS is more suitable for the client’s objectives.

Why Opigno LMS?

Community building: Opigno offers robust features for creating and nurturing a learning community, including discussion forums, comments, and social networking capabilities, fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing among learners.

Seamless integration: As a Drupal-based LMS solution, Opigno seamlessly integrates with the customer’s existing Drupal websites, CRM systems, and external learning resources, enabling a unified and streamlined learning ecosystem.

Scalability: Opigno is highly scalable, allowing the client to expand their learning platform as their user base grows, without compromising performance or user experience.

Security and privacy: It is compliant with the highest information privacy standards including GDPR and offers security features, such as data encryption and 2FA.

No fees and user limits: Opigno LMS has no licensing fees and no restrictions on the number of system users.

Mobile responsiveness: Opigno provides an optimal learning experience across devices, enabling users to access content anytime, anywhere.

Discovery

discovery

Attico’s team managed to complete the discovery phase in about a month, despite the challenges at this initial stage of the project.

Challenges

The client conducted their own internal audit of LMSs simultaneously with our audit: they contacted providers, scheduled demo calls, and posed questions. The key challenge was to synchronize the information about LMS providers obtained by the customer with the data gathered by our specialists.

If a representative from our team could be included in communications at an earlier stage, this would enable us to be better involved in ongoing discussions and avoid duplicate or outdated data retrieval.

Requirements gathering

Our experts conducted a discovery interview with the client and requested them to complete a form containing predefined questions to gather their business requirements. Once the business requirements were detailed, we merged them into a single document, structuring and organizing the information along the way. Subsequently, we reviewed and finalized it with the client before passing it on for analysis.

Technical audit

Next, our team conducted demo calls with LMS vendors to discuss their capabilities in accordance with the previously gathered requirements. We also researched information independently. Based on the information obtained, our specialists conducted a thorough technical audit of the proposed LMS solutions, identifying their opportunities to support the client’s objectives and ensure the success of their e-learning initiatives.

Comparative analysis

Attico’s team performed a comparative analysis of 5 learning management systems based on several critical criteria:

  • Integrations
  • Visual design
  • Functional requirements
  • Security and privacy
  • Data storage capabilities
  • Code quality
  • User management
  • Availability

Based on the findings from the technical audit, we compiled a comparative table to facilitate analysis and decision-making.

Audit

Having compared the LMSs, we concluded that the above-mentioned Opigno LMS was the best solution as it matched the customer’s requirements and allowed us to get started quickly and at a comparably low cost.

Feature validation

We examined the Opigno LMS features to confirm the presence of the stated functionality and its alignment with the customer’s goals. During this phase, our developers set up a sandbox environment to thoroughly test the platform and assess its capabilities, limitations, and potential risks.

For instance, we found that the AI chat that the customer wanted to have was not available in Opigno out-of-the-box, so we suggested a chat assistant that can work with dialog flow supporting predefined questions and answer options as an alternative.

Estimation

Attico’s specialists defined the minimum viable product and a list of future system features, with estimates for development timelines and budgets. Following this, we received a positive response from the client to proceed with MVP development by our company.

Further plans

further plans

Following the customer approval, our next steps include the MVP creation with plans for feature enhancements in the upcoming month.

The forthcoming learning management system is intended to have up to 100K users in 9 months after the launch and extend their number to 1.5 million users in the future. At Attico, we aim to deliver a robust and feature-rich LMS to the customer and provide a superior learning experience for its users.
